On November 11, 1918, the United States joined its fellow Allies in signing an Armistice with Germany that officially ended the fighting in World War I. Exactly 100 years to the day later, President Donald J. Trump stood at Suresnes American Cemetery near Paris, France, honoring the 116,000 Americans who died in that war.

“Here on the revered grounds of Suresnes American Cemetery lie more than 1,500 U.S. service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War,” President Trump said. “In that treacherous forest and the surrounding fields, American Marines, soldiers, and Allied Forces fought—and they fought through hell—to turn the tide of the war.”

“The American and French patriots of World War I embody the timeless virtues of our two republics: honor and courage; strength and valor; love and loyalty; grace and glory,” President Trump said. “It is our duty to preserve the civilization they defended and to protect the peace they so nobly gave their lives to secure one century ago.”

3 big ways President Trump is putting veterans first

“To the 20 million veterans alive today: this Veterans Day, we recommit ourselves to providing you with the care you deserve,” President Trump writes in his 2018 Veterans Day Proclamation.
This President’s commitment to veterans goes beyond rhetoric. In addition to rebuilding America’s military strength to better serve the heroes of today, the Trump Administration has made caring for U.S. veterans a top priority in three big ways:
  1. Honoring our veterans’ service: “We stand up for America. We stand up for the patriots who defend America. And we stand up for our National Anthem,” President Trump told Veterans of Foreign Wars this summer.
  2. Reforming veterans care: The President signed the VA Mission Act into law in June, which enacts sweeping reforms to modernize veterans care and give patients access to walk-in treatment.
  3. Holding the VA accountable: From the start of the Trump Administration through the end of this May, the Department of Veterans Affairs took more than 3,200 accountability actions against employees for misconduct or poor performance, resulting in more than 2,500 removals from positions.
