A LOOK BACK AT THIS WEEK’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS
“On behalf of the American people, WELCOME HOME!”
– President Donald J. Trump

Early Thursday morning, President Donald J. Trump welcomed home three Americans who had been held in North Korea. First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and Second Lady Karen Pence joined the President for the arrival.
“The fact that we were able to get them out so soon was really a tribute to a lot of things, including a certain process that’s taking place right now,” President Trump said. Vice President Pence added that “to be able to have an opportunity to visit with the detainees on the tarmac was deeply moving to Karen and me.”
In a clear sign the Administration’s diplomatic efforts are working, the President also announced that his much-anticipated meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will take place in Singapore on June 12th. “We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!” the President tweeted.
What you need to know: The President’s Victory for the World in Freeing Three Brave Americans
In the early hours of May 10, 2018, President Donald J. Trump had the honor of welcoming three Americans as they finally returned home after being detained in North Korea. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo escorted the detainees back to the United States following discussions with North Korea earlier in the week.
Kim Dong Chul was detained in the fall of 2015, and was later sentenced to ten years of hard labor. He is the longest-held American detainee in North Korea on record, having been held in detention for almost 900 days. Asked how it felt to finally return home, Kim Dong Chul remarked, “It’s like a dream.”
Kim Sang Duk, known as Tony Kim, was arrested in April 2017 while teaching as a professor at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. He had not been tried or sentenced. During his time in detention, Kim Sang Duk’s son led a social media campaign to help raise public awareness about the three detained Americans.
Kim Hak Song was also associated with Pyongyang University of Science and Technology and was detained in North Korea in May 2017. He was not tried or sentenced.
Withdrawing from the Iran Nuclear Deal
“President Trump withdrew from the Iran Nuclear Deal because the United States cannot permit the world’s leading sponsor of terror to ever obtain a nuclear weapon.”
– Vice President Mike Pence

President Trump ended America’s participation in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)—better known as the Iran nuclear deal—this week and will re-impose sanctions on the Iranian regime.
The bottom line is that the nuclear deal failed to protect America’s national security interests. Recent evidence shows that Iran negotiated the JCPOA in bad faith, and the deal handed the Iranian regime far too much in exchange for too little. President Trump remains committed to ensuring that Iran has no possible path to a nuclear weapon. “Finally: A US president is pushing back on Iran’s dangerous and growing power,” the New York Post’s Editorial Board wrote.
PROTECTING AMERICA FROM A BAD DEAL: President Donald J. Trump is terminating the United States’ participation in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran and re-imposing sanctions lifted under the deal.
On Tuesday, President Trump announced his decision to withdraw from the failed Iran nuclear deal. The president has famously referred to it as “the worst deal in history.” Its very premise has been betrayed by its own abysmal track record over the past two years.
President Trump’s Nominee to Lead the CIA Shines This Week
“If I am confirmed as Director, you have my solemn commitment that I will position this agency to provide the intelligence support our country needs to meet the challenges of today and those of tomorrow.”
– Acting CIA Director Gina Haspel
– Acting CIA Director Gina Haspel
Appearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee this week, Gina Haspel showed that President Trump picked the right person to lead the CIA. Haspel is a widely praised career intelligence officer, and by opposing her, some Senators are attempting to block a 33-year career veteran of the CIA—not to mention the first woman ever nominated to be the Agency’s Director.
Current and former intelligence officials attest that Haspel is “unfailingly honest,” “committed to the rule of law,” “professional,” and has a “high moral character.” She has an unparalleled understanding of the CIA, and the Senate should vote to confirm her quickly.

FORMER INTELLIGENCE OFFICER TONY SHAFFER IN THE HILL: Gina Haspel Is the Real Deal
“Rarely have we had a nominee who is both fully qualified for a post and a pioneer who is breaking glass ceilings. Coming out of the ranks of the CIA and not from any political background or loyalty, she can work on focusing the agency on real threats to America. She will make an amazing CIA director.”
What they’re Saying: Support for President Trump’s Nominee for CIA Director
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY): “Gina Haspel is a tremendous choice to lead the Central Intelligence Agency. She would bring more direct, hard-earned experience to the role of @CIA director than any leader in the agency’s history.”

First Lady Melania Trump announced the ‘Be Best’ initiative this week to help young children achieve their full potential. The pillars of the initiative address three crucial issues facing families today: child well-being, social media use, and the risk of opioid abuse.
“There is one goal to BE BEST — and that is to educate children about the many issues they are facing today,” the First Lady said in remarks from the White House Rose Garden.
The mission of BE BEST is to focus on some of the major issues facing children today, with the goal of encouraging children to BE BEST in their individual paths, while also teaching them the importance of social, emotional, and physical health. BE BEST will concentrate on three main pillars: well-being, social media use, and opioid abuse.
BE BEST will champion the many successful well-being programs that provide children with the tools and skills required for emotional, social, and physical health. The campaign will also promote established organizations, programs, and people who are helping children overcome some of the issues they face growing up in the modern world.

Lower Drug Prices for Americans

– Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar

Yesterday, President Trump rolled out the most comprehensive approach to making prescription drugs affordable in U.S. history. The President’s blueprint to lower drug prices has four major components: increasing competition in drug markets, giving Medicare Part D plans better tools to negotiate discounts, providing incentives for lower list prices, and decreasing patients out-of-pocket spending.
“The American people deserve a healthcare system that takes care of them—not one that taxes and takes advantage of our patients and our consumers and our citizens,” President Trump said upon announcing the new plan.
